CUMBERLAND ELECTIONS 5 MAY
CARLISLE HAS LOST TOO MUCH OF ITS HERITAGE, DON’T LET THE BATHS BE NEXT
Elections take place on 5 May for members of the new Cumberland Unitary Authority that will replace Carlisle City Council and Cumbria County Council. Members of the new Cumberland Authority will decide the fate of Carlisle’s Historic Baths. We have written to all the candidates to ask them three important questions about the Baths and what they would do with them if elected on 5 May.

Despite knowing since 2018 that GLL would cease to operate the Baths when the new pool at The Sands Centre opened, Carlisle City Council did not arrange to extend GLL’s contract to run the facility, and voted to close the Baths in November 2022.
Carlisle City Council was abolished in April 2023, and we will be working with the new Cumberland Council towards a Community Asset Transfer (CAT), securing the buildings for community development work to be undertaken with the intention of reopening of the Baths as soon as is possible.
