CUMBERLAND ELECTIONS 5 MAY

CARLISLE HAS LOST TOO MUCH OF ITS HERITAGE, DON’T LET THE BATHS BE NEXT

Elections take place on 5 May for members of the new Cumberland Unitary Authority that will replace Carlisle City Council and Cumbria County Council. Members of the new Cumberland Authority will decide the fate of Carlisle’s Historic Baths. We have written to all the candidates to ask them three important questions about the Baths and what they would do with them if elected on 5 May.

STOP THE TURKISH BATHS CLOSING THIS YEAR

Since 2018 Carlisle City Council have known that GLL will cease to operate the Turkish Baths when the new pools open at The Sands Centre in 2022, but they haven’t arranged either to extend GLL’s contract, appoint a new operator or run it themselves. Currently the Council are threatening to close the Baths from September 2022 with no plan as to how or when it will reopen.

Please Act Now To Stop the City Council Closing the Baths

If you have already written and received a reply, we have drafted a further letter for you to send addressing the points in the reply. Please feel free to copy, paste and adapt this.Time is running out to halt the closure.

The people who will decide the future of Carlisle’s Historic Baths are the local politicians. The Friends are committed to working with the City and County Councils, the local MPs and the new Unitary Authority, but the people politicians listen to most are their constituents and voters.

Cumbria County Council, Carlisle City Council and other district councils like Allerdale are being replaced by two new unitary authorities. The elections for the new unitary authorities happen in May 2022 and who you vote for will be elected for the next five years so they have a really important say in what happens to the Baths. The County and City Councillors also have a significant say as they will continue in their roles until April 2023.

We need local MPs, Councillors and members of the new Unitary Authorities to back the Vision.

You can help by writing  or speaking to them and asking four key questions.  Download these example letters and questions to use when you contact them.
